Fox Valley Area develops “Healthy Choices” for Athletes
In an effort to reach more athletes across the state Special Olympics Wisconsin-Fox Valley Area is piggy-backing on the success of the previously implemented Special Olympics Healthy Athletes initiative by adding a new local program. The goal of the program is to improve, through better health and wellness, each athlete’s ability to train and compete in Special Olympics, a well as make a positive impact in his/her overall quality of life. A Healthy Choices clinic is offered at each area athletic competition. By being a part of local competitions, Healthy Choices is able to reach over 1000 local athletes and provide similar benefits of the Healthy Athletes program; which is only available to those athletes advancing to state competitions.
With the support of Guardian Life and Aurora Health Care, the Healthy Choices program will offer different health and wellness topic at each event. The five key areas addressed by Healthy Choices are: Sun Safety Clinics (offering free sunscreen, lip balm and UV detection bracelets), Dental Hygiene (featuring free toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss), Nutrition Information (including healthy snack stations, meal preparation training, and nutritional guidelines), Healthy Lifestyles (seat belt safety, first aid info, and proper hand washing), and Fitness Emphasis (showcasing exercise routines, proper stretching techniques, and weight management).
This unique health initiative aims to seek and further fulfill Special Olympics goals of offering programming that will significantly improve the quality of life for children and adults with cognitive disabilities in our communities. Special Olympics is known as “training for life” because participants gain skills that prepare them for life on and off the playing field.
