
Athletes participated in soccer, powerlifting, track & field, swimming, softball throw and turbo javelin during the 2009 State Summer Games. This year marked the 30th anniversary of the Games in Stevens Point. Athletes enjoyed an Opening Ceremonies that featured a full athlete parade, jumbotron presentation, and celebrities like Packer AJ Hawk and the Milwaukee Brewers Klement's Racing Sausages.
During the Final Leg, Law Enforcement supporters from across Wisconsin carried the flame of hope from their local communities to light the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony of the State Summer Games in Stevens Point. More information
During the State Summer Games, athletes were invited to participate in the Walmart Healthy Athletes program. Athletes were given mouth guards and fluoride varnishes through Delta Dental Special Smiles. The Lions Club Opening Eyes offered athletes vision testing and some athletes received a new pair of prescription glasses. Some athletes were screened in Health Promotions where they received tips on diet and exercise.
On May 28th, over 200 children ages three and four showed off their skills at A.C. Kiefer Educational Center in Wausau as they rotated through stations with hoops, balls, tunnels and soccer goals that showcased the different skills the children have worked on over the course of an eight-week training program. Ceremony to be held at Lambeau Field on July 19
Special Olympics Wisconsin is proud to announce the 2009 Volunteer Recognition Award winners. The award ceremony is a celebration of award winners from around the state gathering with their friends and family to reflect on a job well done. More information and list of award winners
For the 30th Anniversary of the State Summer Games in Stevens Point, Special Olympics Wisconsin teamed up with the Stevens Point Area Convention and Visitors Bureau for the Adopt an Athlete program. Businesses and organizations were asked to support an athlete’s trip to the games with a $30 donation to Special Olympics. Read More

On June 14, the Donald Driver Charity Softball Game took place in the Fox Cities Stadium near Appleton, WI. Donald Driver and other players from the Green Bay Packers including AJ Hawk, Aaron Kampman and Nick Collins played a softball game, offense vs. defense, while Special Olympics athletes and fans cheered on the players. To recognize her dedication to volunteering for Special Olympics Wisconsin (SOWI), ARAMARK presented Jolene Grass with the 2009 ARAMARK Outstanding Volunteer and Silver Medal Jefferson Award for Public Service on May 14, 2009. Read more

A portrait of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, founder of Special Olympics, was recently unveiled at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. David Lenz of Shorewood, Wis., was the artist chosen to paint Shriver. The portrait of Mrs. Shriver depicts her with several Special Olympics athletes and Best Buddies participants, including Airika Straka (left side of painting) who participates with Special Olympics Wisconsin. In an effort to reach more athletes across the state Special Olympics Wisconsin is piggy-backing on the success of the previously implemented Special Olympics Healthy Athletes initiative by adding two new health programs. Healthy Habits and Healthy Choices are programs that operate at the local level of competition. Read more
