Team Wisconsin Returns Home

Even though Mother Nature sent 90 degree days with over 100 degree heat indexes, Team Wisconsin brought home 121 medals and 19 ribbons for sports including; bowling, aquatics, power lifting, golfing, basketball, tennis, bocce, rhythmic gymnastics, soccer and athletics. The Opening and Closing ceremonies started and ended the event with a bang, and athletes also enjoyed visiting Olympic Town, the Healthy Athletes Program and even a flag football demonstration throughout the week outside of competition.

  • Basketball: Team Wisconsin lost against Missouri 35-21
  • Track and field:
    • Ashlynn Hughes grabbed a bronze medal in the long jump and the 100m;
    • Tom Mislivecek won a bronze in the shot-put, a gold in the long jump and a bronze in the 100m;
    • Brandan Drinkman took a silver in the shot-put, a bronze in the 800m and a silver in the 1500m;
    • Cory Buss took a gold in the pentathlon;
    • Cindy Redlich took a silver in the long jump and a silver in the 100m;
    • Zach Higgs took a 5th in the shot-put and a bronze in the 1500m;
    • Nicole Giesie took a silver in the 100m;
    • Crystalynn Fougner won a gold in the 100m;

    • Michelle Buchanan took a bronze medal
    • Cindy Bentley won a silver medal.
    • Doubles: Emily Datta and Kamala Gesteland took the 4th place ribbon
    • Doubles: Michelle Buchanan and Cindy Bentley took the silver!
  • Powerlifting:
    • Matt Manderfield gold medal in the squat and three bronze medals in the dead lift, bench press and triple combo
    • Brian Schuster won silver for the dead lift and trip combo and bronze medals for the squat and bench press.
    • Jeff Batz won three golds in the triple combo, squat, and dead lift and a silver in the bench.
  • Swimming:
    • Christine Cherne, Ann Hellmuth, Rebecca Stelpflug and Jessica West won gold in the 4x100 relay
    • Jessica West won gold in the 400 freestyle final
    • Ann Hellmuth won gold in the 100 individual medley
    • Chris Cherne won silver in the 100 individual medley
    • Chris Cherne won gold in the 100 breaststroke
    • Jessica West won silver in the 100 breaststroke
  • Bowling: Both teams of four took 4th place in team competition
  • Soccer: Silver medal winner after double overtime loss to Pennsylvania
  • Bocce:
    • Andrew Dalin and James Hundt silver in doubles
    • Sara Schumacher and Julie Wildenberg silver medal in doubles
    • Rebecca Burkee and Sheila Kates 5th place ribbon

  • Golf:
    • Bill Wagner & Terry Schill took the gold medal.
    • Rick Goetzinger took silver and David Mahan took bronze
  • Soccer: Win v. Massachusetts 1-0. Played Massachusetts a second time and won 3-2
  • Tennis: Preliminaries continued
  • Basketball: Win v Missouri 35-24
  • Gymnastics:
    • Eresi Yarney took the gold in the hoop, ball, clubs and the all-around, and a silver in the ribbon.
    • Elisabeth Anderson took the gold in the hoop, ball, ribbon and all-around, and a silver in the rope competition. 
    • Mary Grover took three silver medals in the ball, ribbon and all-around, followed by two bronze medals in the ball and the all-around.
    • Nadine McKee took three silvers in the ball, ribbon and all-around, and two bronze medals in the rope and hoop.
  • Swimming:
    • Rebecca Stelpflug: 4th place in 100 freestyle race. Gold in 100 backstroke
    • Relay Team of Christine Cherne, Ann Hellmuth Rebecca Stelpflug and Jessica West: Gold in medley relay
  • Powerlifting: Steve McCain took gold in the bench press, a silver in the triple combo, a silver in the squat and a 4th in the dead lift.
  • Bowling: Doubles
    • Don Morinelli and Tom Abler got a 4th
    • Jodi Zimmerman and Sherri Schelk earned a silver medal
    • Joe Anderson and Joe Neumann won a gold medal
    • Lynn Carus and Marie Engebrecht also have a gold
  • Track and Field:
    • Nicole Giese won gold in shotput
    • Cindy Redlich won gold in shotput
    • Crystalynn Fougner won gold in shotput
    • Zach Higgs won a silver in the 400
    • Ashlynn Hughes won silver in the 200
    • Crystalynn won silver in the 200

National Games Means More than Gold for this Athlete of the Year

“How are the kids?” “When is the track and field meet this year?” So many individuals mistake Special Olympics as an organization for children that allows them to take part in running competitions. Results Summary

  • Basketball: Team Wisconsin over Team Maryland 34-20
  • Bocce: Andrew Dalin and James Hundt played doubles in their competition bracket and won, as well as Sara Schumacher and Julie Wildenberg who also won in their doubles bracket against Minnesota. Sheila Kates and Rebecca Burkee lost their game
  • Bowling: Lynn Carus took 7th, Marie Wngebrecht took 5th, Sheri Schelk took the bronze medal and Jodi Zimmerman got the gold
  • Soccer: Game 1: 1-1 tie v. Pennsylvania, Game 2: 4-2 loss v. Kansas
  • Swimming: Preliminaries started at 9 am with Chris Cherne and Ann Hellmuth swimming the 100 Individual Medley then Chris Cherne and Jessica Westswam the 100m breaststroke after lunch.
  • Tennis: Cindy Bentley and Michelle Buchanan played at 8 am and had a rougher morning, but played wonderfully in the afternoon. Kamala Gesteland and Emily Datta played at 8:45 and lost a tough one in a tie breaker!

National Games athletes and coaches prepare for send-off on July 17

Coaches, supporters, and fans will wave farewell to Team Wisconsin’s 63 athletes and 20 coaches as they board buses en route to Lincoln, Nebraska on Saturday, July 17 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Ten Pin Alley in Fitchburg.

Athletes and Coaches attend Training Camp

In April, 64 athletes and nearly 20 coaches of Team Wisconsin gathered for training camp at UW Oshkosh to prepare for their trip to the Special Olympics U.S. National Games in Lincoln, Nebraska on July 18-24. The training camp allowed the athletes, who have been training back home, to have some training time with their National Games coach in various locations around Oshkosh, and also allow for the team to receive their uniforming and team photos. Knights of Columbus sign on as National Games State Premier Partner

The Knights of Columbus of Wisconsin have chosen to Be a Fan of Opportunity and help make dreams come true by becoming the Premier Partner of Team Wisconsin. Local Knights of Columbus councils around the state will raise funds in a variety of ways, including hosting local card parties, bingo nights, car washes or brat fries to send Team Wisconsin to the 2010 National Games in Lincoln, Nebraska.

“From the prospective of the Knights of Columbus we have one simple concrete goal for the future of Special Olympics and that is that every Special Olympics athlete have the opportunity to compete and find this way of realizing his or her talents,” said Carl Anderson, Supreme Knight, Knights of Columbus in a 2008 Special Olympics Illinois / Illinois Knights of Columbus Video.

National Games Athletes headed to training camp this weekend

Oshkosh will be overtaken by Special Olympics Wisconsin two weekends in a row as the third weekend in April will bring the 64 athletes and nearly 20 coaches of Team Wisconsin together for training camp. The team is preparing for their trip to the Special Olympics U.S. National Games in Lincoln, Nebraska on July 18-24. The training camp will allow the athletes, who have been training back home, to have some training time with their National Games coach in various locations around Oshkosh, and also allow for the team to receive their uniforming and team photos.

A send off ceremony and press conference will be held in Madison, WI on Saturday, July 17 before the team loads buses for their trip to Nebraska.

Athletes attend sports camp for a chance to attend 2010 National Games

Nearly 100 athletes from across the state met at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh for the 2010 National Games Assessment & Selection Camp held September 11-13, 2009. Athletes gave their strongest effort in sports including: bowling, aquatics, power lifting, golfing, basketball, tennis, bocce, soccer, rhythmic gymnastics, and athletics in hopes they will become one of the 64 athletes selected to represent Team Wisconsin at the Special Olympics 2010 USA National Games held July 18-24, 2010 in Lincoln, Nebraska.
