Special Olympics Volleyball has "spiked" in popularity and is offered in all US programs and in over 30 countries around the world. Athletes benefit from the camaraderie of being on a team while the athletic training allows them to successfully serve and return the volleyball. Athletes are grouped in divisions according to the athletes' ability level. Special Olympics Wisconsin also offers Volleyball in the Unified Sports model. This model allows athletes with and without cognitive disabilities to compete on one team.

Volleyball is part of the Special Olympics Officials Program for Athletes. This program involves interested Special Olympics athletes who want to become certified volleyball officials. These athletes take the same course and meet the same requirements set forth by the United States Volleyball Association for all volleyball officials and become certified to officiate Volleyball competitions.
